Forget Paris, Rome has to be one of the most romantic cities in the world, with romance built into its very soul and written into the very name of the city, it can be no coincidence that Roma spelt backwards is amor (love). There’s something extremely warm and sensual about Rome, it must be the cobbled-stoned alleys, the breath-taking views and the gorgeous light. No wonder artists, writers and romantic poets have fallen in love with this magical city!

Finding a gorgeous spot to propose in Rome won’t be difficult, choosing between many perfect places will be the real problem. So if you are planning to propose to your girlfriend/boyfriend in Rome and whether you are looking for an iconic landmark, a breath-taking view or a gorgeous hidden place here are my suggestions.

GIANICOLO HILL

Undoubtedly one of Rome’s most romantic spots. The panorama here is breath-taking, the view stretches over bell towers, ancient ruins and beautiful domes. Go just before the sun sets, when a glorious golden light illuminates the roofs of Rome.

THE LAKE IN VILLA BORGHESE

The lush, green Borghese Gardens are absolutely beautiful. Perfect for a romantic stroll and in the middle of all this beauty you will come across a gorgeous lake, where you can rent a row-boat and take your beloved to admire the temple of Asclepius and get down on one knee… Don’t worry the lake is not that deep, just in case you fall in!

THE COLOSSEUM

Visiting this spectacular monument is a breathtaking experience …., so why not make it even more special by proposing in one of the most precious ancient monuments still in existence. Go just before sunset when the walls of the Colosseum turn to a gorgeous golden hue.

Try to be there very early in the morning or late at night to avoid crowds of tourists. The fountain is stunning when it’s illuminated at night but it’s just as magical in the early morning light. (The Trevi fountain is currently under restoration and it will be unveiled by 2015).

PONTE SANT’ANGELO

Strolling along the water in the twilight hours, when the sun sets over the beautiful domes can be a magical experience. Ponte Sant’ Angelo is one of the most famous and elegant bridges in Rome., leading from the city to Castel Sant’ Angelo. Ten strikingly beautiful angel sculptures, designed by Bernini line this spectacular bridge. Bernini only managed to finish two of the angels (that are now kept in the church Sant’Andrea dell Fratte), but his design and vision of the bridge was carried out by his successors. From the bridge you have one of the most spectacular views of Saint Peter’s basilica, especially at sunset when the sky turns pink behind the stunning dome of the basilica.

THE ORANGE TREE GARDEN AND THE AVENTINE HILL

The Aventine Hill is a peaceful and elegant neighborhood in Rome, where luxurious houses sit side by side with ancient buildings. PIAZZA MATTEI AND THE TURTLE FOUNTAIN

In a charming, hidden square in the jewish ghetto the turtle fountain is a little gem, considered to be a jewel of the renaissance sculpture, and one of Rome’s most exquisite fountains.The legend tells that the Duke Mattei had the fountain built within one day, in the square where his palazzo stood, to impress the father of the girl he loved.
